Zellige Tiles: Back in or have they always been in fashion?

Zellige tiles: Back in or have they always been in fashion? We think that they have never really gone out of fashion, although I suspect that not many of them are hand-crafted in Morocco or made from natural clay any more.

Some of them do however feature a distinctive glossy glaze, are sometimes irregular in shape, have ‘perfectly imperfect’ surfaces and feature vibrant colour variations.

At the Stone and Ceramic Warehouse, some of our brick tiles are closer than others to the dictionary definition of Zellige tiles, but we’re going to feature some others which may be of interest, but which may not technically qualify as Zellige!  We are using some artistic licence in this blog!

Brilliant Colours | Zellige Tiles

With brilliant colours, our Venezia Brick tiles probably come closest and are proving hugely popular at the moment.

Coming in a whopping 17 different colours, these highly polished brick tiles come in both bright and zingy colours as well as more neutral tones, and have a natural variation from tile to tile.

Retailing at £70 – £75 + VAT per square metre, and 5.2 x 16 x 1cm in size, we’ve had a lot of success combining them with the matt Trevi Brick range, alternating matt and polished tiles to great effect.

Soft Neutrals | Zellige Tiles

Soft neutrals are a signature feature of the Trevi Brick tile range which has great versatility.

Coming in a range of neutral and stronger colours, these matt tiles have a natural variation from tile to tile.

They are 5.2 x 16 x 1cm in size and retail at £70 – £75 + VAT per square metre.

There are 12 colours to choose from. So something for everyone.

Deep Vibrancy | Zellige Tiles

With deep vibrancy in its colours, our Loom range is gorgeous and comes in seven rich variants, with the blues and greens being particularly eye-catching.

They are highly polished and have a natural variation from tile to tile.

Size-wise, they are 6 x 24 x 1cm, can be laid in a variety of different ways: brickbond, soldiers or herringbone for added creative impact and retail at a very reasonable £68 + VAT per square metre.

Matt Depth |Zellige Tiles

Park Lane only comes in a matt finish but if you are looking for impact in a room, then this is the range for you.

They are 4.6 x 37.5 x 0.85cm, so are longer than some of our brick tiles and retail at £71.60 + VAT per square metre.

They can be laid in a number of different ways as mentioned above, herringbone, soldiers, brickbond, but their real appeal is in the rich deep colours – there are six of them with a slight variation from tile to tile.

They are really beautiful and look incredible.

Terracotta for the Modern Day

Terracott for the modern day is how we describe our final featured range, Cotto and we also think that a porcelain terracotta tile works incredibly well with the brick tiles we’ve already talked about.

The Cotto range comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes and four natural looking colours.

Starting from £62 + VAT per square metre, it is hard to believe that these tiles aren’t real terracotta.
